Delen Refresh
Published: December 2019
Dear colleague,
We're pleased to announce that the Delen site will enter the new year with a brand-new look and structure.
The site has been redesigned to better reflect our core products and the services that we provide, to make it easier for our users to find the information that they're looking for, quickly!
Below is a brief summary of the additions and changes we've made:
Summary of changes
- The colour of the main interface will be changed to give the site a cleaner, fresher look
- The navigation images on the homepage will been modernised and we'll add links to:
- SNOMED CT, dm+d, ICD-10, OPCS-4, NICIP
- SNOMED CT to Classification Maps
- ICD-11 evaluation
- Education & e-Learning materials
- Past and present consultations - to gain input from our users to help us make better decisions and help us understand the priorities of our stakeholders
- Support and advice - to provide guidance for users with specific queries
- Our Service Improvement Plan - to indicate progress against our commitments agreed within our Annual Survey
- Popular publications and education materials will be added onto our product pages, with the aim that everything our users need is in one place
- The latest news section will be condensed so that users can see - at a glance - the top ten latest news articles, categorised by publication date.
The development work is due to take place between Christmas and the new year so those working on Delen at this time may see changes to the interface of the site but no practical or access issues should occur.
We look forward to hearing your feedback in the new year!
Kind regards

Draft 2020/21 Training Schedule
Published: December 2019
Dear colleague,
We are pleased to announce this draft training schedule of planned dates only for our 2020/21 training events. This draft has been published to allow you to provisionally book potential dates in your diaries.
Please note that the final training schedule confirming venues and prices will be published on Delen at the end of January 2020 and the dates outlined below may be subject to change depending on logistical considerations.
Important information
- Due to a very low number of expressions of interest on our Early Notification List (only eight), we currently have no plans to hold a Clinical Coding Trainer Programme (CCTP) Assessment Day in 2020/21. However, should demand increase to 12 or more expressions of interest between now and mid-January, we will reconsider this decision. The consequent time released will allow us to concentrate on revamping the new modular Clinical Coding Audit Workshop ready for April 2021 and on ICD-11 evaluation.
- Candidates wishing to apply for the 2020/21 Clinical Coding Auditor Programme (CCAP) are advised to review Sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the 2019/20 Clinical Coding Auditor Programme Handbook until the new version of the handbook and application documents are available at the end of January. Please note that no applications will be accepted until the final training schedule is published and anyone on our Early Notification List will be advised of dates at least one week before publication.
- We’ve received feedback that key points about the underlying principles of classifications need to be strengthened in our training materials. The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service and Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) propose to work collaboratively to develop a new pre-Clinical Coding Standards Course (CCSC) classroom module entitled ‘Introduction to Classifications’. Subject to completion of this work dates for this training will be published on the final training schedule at the end of January 2020. All approved clinical coding trainers are required to attend this one-day training event which will replace the usual mandatory Trainer Forum for one year only. Attendance will be free of charge and all attendees will be given access to the materials to deliver to CCSC delegates from 1 April 2021 and to experienced coders where considered to be beneficial in the interim. These materials will be built into the national training materials costs to commercial trainers from 2020/21.
- Review of our training records confirms that only two Trainer Refresher Courses are needed in 2020/21 with six trainers requiring Re-Certification assessment; several trainers are however overdue their Re-Certification assessment. If you’re unsure whether your Trainer Refresher Course and or Re-Certification assessment is due/overdue, please email information.standards@nhs.net

Summary of changes from OPCS-4.8 to OPCS-4.9 update
Published: November 2019
Dear colleague
The Summary of Changes from OPCS-4.8 to OPCS-4.9 has been updated. This is because one change in the Alphabetical Index was included and two changes in the Tabular List were omitted from the document in error.
The Summary of Changes document will be replaced within the OPCS-4.9 Data Files Release on TRUD. The changes only effect the Summary of Changes document and none of the other OPCS-4.9 Data files (Metadata, Codes and Titles, Table of Coding Equivalences and XML files). Users who have already downloaded the release files will receive a separate communication from TRUD informing them of the change.
The document will also be replaced in the ‘Key documents’ section for the Information Standards Notice.
Details of the changes are included within the updated Summary of Changes from OPCS-4.8 to OPCS-4.9 which you can access from the OPCS-4 page on Delen.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards

ICD-11 Chapter Reviews
Published: November 2019
Dear colleague,
NHS Digital hosts the UK WHO-FIC Collaborating Centre and as part of our role we are contributing to the updating of ICD-11 for morbidity coding and would like to offer clinicians and other users of the classification an opportunity to review chapter content and provide feedback to us.
The chapter reviews are part of our development work to assure the content from a UK perspective and to inform a future decision on its adoption and implementation. The World Health Assembly adopted ICD-11 in May 2019 with the expectation that member states will start to report in ICD-11 from January 2022 as detailed in the WHO resolution. The implementation roadmap for the UK has yet to be determined; no decision has been made on the implementation date of ICD-11 in England. NHS Digital is undertaking further testing of the latest release and supporting products to understand the impact on implementing ICD-11 and to inform a future decision.
We are inviting clinicians and healthcare professionals to review the content of ICD-11 to identify if there are any:
- diagnoses or conditions that are missing
- code descriptions which are ambiguous or incorrect
Our dedicated ICD-11 Chapter Reviews page includes instructions on how to complete the chapter reviews and an overview of the ICD-11 chapters. The overview contains information that you may find useful about each chapter, including what is classified within each chapter; a comparison between ICD-10 and ICD-11 block structure; chapter structure and rationale. At the end of the review there is the opportunity to submit proposed changes.
If there are any clinicians at your organisation who are interested in reviewing ICD-11 content, please forward this information onto them.
The ICD-11 Chapter reviews can be accessed here.
Thank you in advance for your support with this activity.
Kind regards
