  After a review of our Terminology Service we’ve introduced some changes to 2021/22 SNOMED CT UK Clinical Edition and National Interim Clinical Imaging Procedure (NICIP) releases.

• April 2020 NICIP Release

  Published: April 2020

  Dear colleague,

  The National Interim Clinical Imaging Procedure (NICIP) code set April 2020 Release is now available for download.

  Important information about this release

  In light of the current pandemic, NHS Digital resource has been focused on providing care-critical COVID-19 content for the SNOMED CT release. As a result, the April 2020 NICIP release will only include NICIP-OPCS-4.9 mapping update and no changes to NICIP-SNOMED CT mappings and no new NICIP code additions.

  All other NICIP files will be static from the June 2019 release and can continue to be used though files dated with the April 2020 release are included but remain static. The next full release will again follow our schedule for October 2020.

• National Interim Clinical Imaging Procedure (NICIP) Code Set - April 2020 release information

  Dear Colleague,

  The biannual release of new National Interim Clinical Imaging Procedure (NICIP) code set content scheduled for 1 April 2020 will only include the NICIP-OPCS-4.9 mapping update and no changes to NICIP-SNOMED CT mappings.  

  All other NICIP files will be static from the June 2019 release and can continue to be used though files dated with the April 2020 release are included but remain static.  The next full release will again follow our schedule for October 2020. 

  The content originally planned to be released on 1 April 2020 was expected to include NICIP to SNOMED CT map updates to new international SNOMED CT content. In light of the current pandemic, we recognise that large scale changes to the coding framework could impose significant assurance and change management burden on suppliers, which may delay the deployment of care-critical SNOMED CT COVID-19 content.  Because of this a limited NICIP release as described above will be available.

• Information regarding the scheduled October 2019 NICIP release

  Dear colleague,

  Due to the constraints placed on us by the introduction of a new authoring system, there will be no October 2019 NICIP release and the June 2019 release content will remain unchanged. As a result, all requested changes and updates to the June 2019 release will be carried forward to the next release.

  Once we have developed our authoring systems to accommodate NICIP production, we will automate and integrate the authoring of the NICIP code set into SNOMED CT (including cross-maps). We will then have improved capacity and better tools which we will use to improve our products and services (Including SNOMED CT and NICIP) for the benefit of users.

  We will confirm our position in relation to the April 2020 release in the new year but if you would like any information about any aspect of NICIP releases, please email information.standards@nhs.net.
